In Memory of Lucy
lung cancer treatment

Lucy’s struggle with cancer is finally over. She was a real trooper through the last two and eight months. When Lucy was originally diagnosed with cancer, we put her through surgery, chemo and other treatments which seemed to help for a while. About a year into the course of the disease, her cancer moved into her lungs and the subsequent treatments began to fail. The vet told us back in June that this version of lung cancer was very aggressive and not responding to treatment so, we stopped the chemo and waited knowing that her time with us was probably going to be short. The fact that she made it another 8 months has to be solely due to Lucy’s internal drive to be with us and to be loved. This past week was really tough for her. There were new signs that told us she needed to be relieved from her discomfort and suffering. My wife and I had numerous discussions about when we’d know that it was time. Like most dogs, Lucy’s always been stoic and always hid her discomfort. When she stopped eating (like most English Cocker Spaniels, the thing she loved most in life), we knew how she really felt. Even with the signs present, it’s impossibly difficult to make such a decision. Even with two and a half year to prepare, there’s still isn’t enough time to say goodbye. It’s amazing how much dogs become a part of your life. While they’re with us they offer undying love and devotion asking nothing in return. We were lucky to be part of Lucy’s pack! I’m sure she’s in dog heaven eating steak (and never gaining weight), chasing squirrels, getting scratched behind her ears, dozing on sofas, following her nose on long walks and sleeping in the warm sun on cold winter days.
